Malaysian water firm opts for plastic meters

Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia --- (METERING.COM)¨C From November this year plastic water meters will be installed in new housing areas and at houses where existing brass meters have been stolen or damaged, eastern Malaysian coastal state Terengganu water utility Syarikat Air Terengganu Sdn Bhd (SATU) has announced.
SATU chief executive officer Datuk Wan Ngah Ali commented: ¡°The use of plastic instead of brass hopefully with overcome the problem of water meter thefts.¡± Initially 1,000 plastic meters will be installed in the region at a cost of RM50 (US$14), compared with the RM60 (US$16) of the brass alternative.
SATU is not the first water utility in Malaysia to take this step, with theft of water meters exceeding 5,000 meters per year in some states. Earlier this year Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas), which is responsible for supplying water to Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, introduced plastic water meters as well as water prepayment meters and meters linked to a burglar alarm system in order to curb what it described as the rampant theft of the brass meters for sale to scrap metal dealers. At the time the scrap metal dealers were reported to be paying between RM20 to 30 (US$5 to 11) per meter.
